Show Your NAS Photos on a Tablet Frame

Synology, QNAP, or any SMB share → an always-on slideshow, no cloud required

July 2026 · 6 min read

If you run a NAS, you already solved photo storage: everything lives on your Synology or QNAP, organized, backed up, yours. The unsolved part is seeing those photos. They sit in /photo/2019/ and nobody has opened that folder since 2019.

The fix is a tablet on a shelf that reads the NAS directly over SMB. No re-uploading to a cloud, no cloud-storage subscription, no duplicate copies — the frame streams what the NAS already has, and new photos appear on the frame automatically.

What you need

Step 1 — Make a read-only NAS user for the frame

Do not put your admin credentials on a shelf device. Create a user like frame with read-only permission on your photo share and nothing else. Two minutes now, and the frame can never delete or modify anything.

Step 2 — Connect the app to the share

In PicDock: Photo source → SMB/NAS → Add server. Enter the NAS address (e.g. 192.168.1.20 or synology.local), the frame user, and pick the folders to show. Subfolders are included, so pointing it at /photo covers the whole archive.

Step 3 — Settings that matter for NAS frames

Wi-Fi and performance notes

Why not just use the NAS vendor's app?

Synology Photos and QNAP's apps are good at browsing and backup, but their slideshow modes are built for occasional viewing, not for an always-on frame: no clock, no weather, no auto-start on power, no night schedule. A frame app treats the slideshow as the product, not a feature.

Building the frame itself? The hardware side — stands, chargers, burn-in, auto-start — is covered in our old-tablet frame guide. And if you are still choosing an app, here is our honest 2026 app comparison.
