Disclosure up front. We make PicDock, the Android app used in the steps below, so we are not neutral. Every PicDock detail here was checked against the source code of the released version (1.8.8) in September 2026, we list what it cannot do with OneDrive, and we name a OneDrive-only alternative.
If your family runs on Windows and Office, the photos probably already live in OneDrive: the phone's camera upload, the folder someone shares after a holiday, the scans of old prints. And there is often an old Android tablet in a drawer. The OneDrive app on that tablet is a file browser, not a frame — it will not sit on a shelf and cycle through a folder all day, and it will not show new photos unless someone taps.
Short answer: use a frame app that signs in to OneDrive. Put the frame photos in one OneDrive folder, sign in once on the tablet, pick that folder, and leave it running. New photos added to the folder show up on their own.
What you need
- A personal Microsoft account with OneDrive — Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, or Microsoft 365 Personal/Family. Work or school accounts do not work in PicDock (details below).
- An Android tablet or phone running Android 7.0 or later.
- PicDock (Google Play name: "Photo Slideshow, Digital Frame"). PicDock is not the macOS app picdock.app — that is an unrelated product.
Step 1 — In OneDrive: make a frame folder
- On your PC (File Explorer → OneDrive), on onedrive.com or in the OneDrive phone app, create a folder at the top level of your OneDrive, for example
Frame. - Copy or move the photos you want on the frame into it. Subfolders are fine — when you choose a folder, PicDock also reads every folder inside it.
Why the top level? PicDock's folder list shows your Pictures folder (listed as "Photos") and the folders directly in your OneDrive root. Deeper folders are not listed on their own; they are included through their parent.
Step 2 — On the tablet: sign in and pick the folder
- Open PicDock → Photo sources → OneDrive.
- A Microsoft sign-in page opens in the browser. Sign in with your personal Microsoft account and approve the permission request. PicDock asks for read-only access to your files; it cannot change or delete anything in your OneDrive. You stay signed in, so this is a one-time step.
- Tick the folder (you can tick several). "All photos" uses the whole account instead — possible, but slower to scan and refreshed less often, so a folder is the better choice for a frame.
- If something is already showing, choose Replace (only OneDrive) or Add to current (mix OneDrive with photos on the tablet, Google Photos, Dropbox, an iCloud shared album or a NAS).
Then set the tablet to stay on while charging and put it on the shelf. Our always-on tablet guide covers keeping the screen on, night hours and starting when the charger is connected.
How new photos reach the frame
A frame on a shelf is never touched, so the refresh interval decides when new photos appear. In the released version, PicDock re-reads OneDrive while the slideshow runs:
- A chosen folder: every 30 minutes. (Several folders: also 30 minutes.)
- Whole account ("All photos"): every 2 hours, because it has to search the entire drive.
- When you come back to the app, it checks at the next photo change, at most once every 5 minutes. So the usual "I just added photos, let me look at the frame" moment works without waiting.
Deleted photos are removed from the frame on the same schedule. If OneDrive does not answer, or a scan suddenly looks like more than half the photos vanished with nothing new, the frame keeps its current list instead of emptying itself — a hiccup is not treated as "everything was deleted". The checks run while the slideshow is running; a paused or closed app does not refresh.
Sharing one folder with the family
The frame shows folders in the signed-in account's own OneDrive. The simplest family setup is: the frame's account owns the Frame folder and shares it from OneDrive with edit permission, so relatives can add photos to it from their own devices. Their uploads land in the owner's folder, and the frame picks them up at the next refresh. PicDock lists folders in the signed-in account's own OneDrive; we have not verified folders that someone else owns and shared with you, so keep the frame folder in the frame account.
Offline and caching
Photos are downloaded as they come up and kept in an on-device cache of up to about 500 MB, oldest removed first. Photos already in the cache can be shown again without the network; photos that were never downloaded cannot. There is no "download the whole folder for offline" switch, so a frame that is regularly offline is better served by copying the photos to the tablet itself.
What PicDock cannot do with OneDrive
Plainly, as of the released version 1.8.8 (September 2026):
- No work or school accounts. The sign-in uses Microsoft's personal-account endpoint. OneDrive for Business and SharePoint libraries are not supported.
- No videos from OneDrive. The OneDrive source shows photos only (JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, WebP, and HEIC/HEIF on Android 9 or later); videos in the folder are skipped. PicDock plays videos from the tablet's own storage, not from OneDrive.
- "All photos" mode finds fewer formats. Whole-account mode searches for JPG, PNG and GIF files. If your photos are HEIC (common from iPhones), choose a folder instead.
- Only top-level folders in the picker, plus Pictures. Put the frame folder at the top level, or pick its parent.
- Not instant. New photos appear within about 30 minutes for a folder, not the moment you upload them — unless you open the app, which checks right away.
- No full offline copy (see above).
Another honest option: SkyFolio
SkyFolio by Snapwood is a OneDrive-only gallery and slideshow app. Its Google Play listing (checked September 24, 2026) describes it as "an photo gallery and slideshow app for Microsoft OneDrive", says it can "display photos and videos from One Drive folders", mentions Android TV and casting, and offers offline access: "Sync your photos to your device for offline access." The listing shows in-app purchases and no ads. We have not tested it, so read the listing yourself — but if OneDrive videos or full offline sync matter more to you than mixing sources, it is worth a look.
PicDock's case is the other way round: OneDrive is one of several sources you can mix on the same frame, plus the clock, weather, night sleep and charging auto-start that a tablet on a shelf needs. For a wider look, see our comparison of Android photo frame apps.
What it costs
The Google Play version of PicDock is free to download, and the free version includes every photo source, OneDrive included, with automatic refresh. Optional Premium adds extras such as more transitions, forecasts and clock designs: US$19.99 as a lifetime one-time purchase, or a yearly or monthly subscription (prices shown in the app and vary by country). FAQ
Can an Android tablet show a OneDrive folder as a photo frame?
Yes. The OneDrive app is a file browser, but frame apps that sign in to OneDrive can play a folder full screen. In PicDock: Photo sources → OneDrive, sign in with a personal Microsoft account, tick the folder.
Do new photos added to OneDrive appear automatically?
Yes. While the slideshow runs, PicDock re-reads a chosen folder every 30 minutes (the whole account every 2 hours) and also checks when you return to the app, at most once every 5 minutes. Deleted photos are removed too.
Does it work with a work or school account?
Not in PicDock. Only personal Microsoft accounts work; OneDrive for Business and SharePoint are not supported.
Are videos in OneDrive shown?
Not in PicDock. The OneDrive source shows photos only and skips videos. SkyFolio's listing says it displays OneDrive videos, if that matters to you.
Does the frame keep working if the Wi-Fi drops?
Partly. Photos already shown stay in a cache of about 500 MB and the photo list is kept through a failed refresh, but photos that were never downloaded wait for the connection to return.
In short
OneDrive family, spare Android tablet: make a top-level OneDrive folder for the frame, sign in with a personal Microsoft account, pick the folder, and leave the slideshow running. New photos appear within about 30 minutes, or right away when you open the app. Photos only, not videos, and not work/school accounts.
